Mazda began as the name of a three wheeled truck produced by the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company in 1931. Before they were able to really do something with the Mazda, they had to halt production to help with the Japanese war effort in World War II. It wouldn't be until the 1960s with the release of a Mazda sedan, that the brand would be offered to the world. Don't let their slow start fool you. The 60s were full of innovations for the Mazda. (You probably didn't see any Mazda cars or truck in Cincinnati at this time, though.)
Mazda made its way to Cincinnati and the rest of the United States in the 1970s, during the big oil crisis when small, dependable foreign cars really began to gain popularity in the United States. They were one of the first companies to pioneer the rotary engine, which was pretty revolutionary for its time. By the late 70s, though, the company was having financial difficulties. They were helped out by Ford, who invested in a 25% stake in the company. After that, in the 80s, Mazda really took off in the Cincinnati and all over the country.
Today, Mazda is known for their "Zoom-Zoom" commercials and the fact that their cars are sporty, zippy, a little different, and something you should at least drive once to experience. They've really managed to survive a lot of ups and down over the years since they started their life in the auto industry as a three wheeled truck.
